The Tidewater Trading Post has provided a risk-free medium to advertise privately owned articles since 1963. It was started by two young ODU business school professors who believed that many unused items could become marketable if an area wide advertising medium, without financial risk, were available. Over the years, the main feature of the Trading Post has been "advertise free, pay only if and when you sell." Although other options are available, this no-risk advertising remains the distinguishing feature.

The Trading Post's emphasis is on items of local interest. Although household articles of any description can be found in the many categories, the Trading Post also maintains one of the largest listings of automobiles and related articles for sale by private owners in the Greater Hampton Roads area.
